Chicago-Based Business Partners Band Together to Create a Retailer with Personality


CHICAGO, IL. (April 19, 2016) – A new belt brand launches this month from three determined entrepreneurs and friends - Patrick O’Hara, 27, Jon Woo, 28, and Stephanie Zipp, 27. After a year of product development: choosing fabrics, buckles, leather, testing color combinations and quality testing; they’ve created Never Back LLC, a handmade needlepoint belts company.  The belts are available now nationwide via their website The name draws inspiration from the poet Henry David Thoreau, who famously said, “Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.”

While traditional needlepoint belt brands hail from the East Coast and target a preppy lifestyle, Never Back aims to bring the belt concept westward with a more casual style. Never Back currently offers three designs, called “The Golden Bear,” “From Sea to Shining Sea,” and “Old Glory,” with expanded offerings to follow.

     The Golden Bear: Paying homage to the greatest golfer of all-time, Jack Nicklaus, this belt design features a green background and alternating golf ball with clubs and flag designs. Price: $95.

     From Sea to Shining Sea: Nautical by nature, this belt design features a beige background with nautical code flags, arranged to spell out “From Sea to Shining Sea.” Price: $95.

     Old Glory: Remiss to not show some patriotism, this belt design features a blue background with a repeating traditional American flag. Price: $95.

Each belt has been designed in-house and every item is hand-inspected for quality assurance before shipping. The belts are made of high-quality cotton and leather and feature a brass buckle.

“I’ve been wearing needlepoint belts for more than half of a decade now.  They were all handmade by my grandmother or mom and have various themes that mean something to me,” says co-founder Patrick O’Hara. “One is a tribute to my hometown, another to my college, and a few other one-of-a-kind belts.  I love how they tell a story and always serve as a great conversation starter.”

The three close friends met while attending Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. The diverse trio grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and come from finance and marketing backgrounds. They currently work and reside in Chicago and St. Louis. 

“We’re such a symbolic generation. Just look at how Millennials communicate with emojis,” explains co-founder Stephanie Zipp, “Why should it be any different with your wardrobe? That’s where I saw the opportunity. Men express themselves to a degree with hats, socks, and sneakers, but fun belt options are scarce.”
